New York Central no .31 Engagement Session

Emily and Greg recently got married on Emily’s gorgeous family property on Sept 27th, 2014.  It was a stunning event and I can’t wait to share it as soon as the blog is ready.  For now, their lovely engagement session at the New York Central No.31 Pier will have to do.  Not many Google results for New York Central no .31 Engagement Session huh?  The couple, like so many of my clients are in love, young and excited about their future together.  Emily was a natural and a breeze to work with and Greg’s warm smile just light up the overcast day.

It was the couples idea to meet at New York Central No.31 Pier then venture out into the city streets.  Nothing is more fun than walking around alone (well, the three of us) in NYC.  Picking the right day and time can lead to a marvelously quiet session.  Photographing them was effortless and it was as if I was not even there.  To them I may not have been :).  At any rate, I captured some of my favorite engagement session photos and loved some of the final black and whites.

So before I go, here are 3 quick tips on settling on a location (although I didn’t find this one).  1. Popular is not always cliche.  Whenever you hear someone say, ‘everybody does that’ (insert eye roll) we tend to shy away from doing it ourselves.  Well sometimes the unique element has just got to be you, what you wear and the connection you feel.  If its ‘popular’ it means its special.  2.  Close to home.  Sometimes looking for scenes close to home, like Emily and Greg did, is a great way to find a familiar location with many options because you know whats around the corner.  3. Embrace the weather, whatever it turns out to be.  When I photographed this couple hoping for a gorgeous sun lit horizon, we got an overcast sky instead.  This meant we get to shoot for longer and the colors in everything else feel more vibrant and true.

Where-ever you choose to do capture your session, have fun with it.  Try not to over-think or over-plan.  It about you’re connection as a couple a getting to know your photographer.
